This 1964 AEC Routemaster double-decker bus entered service at the Willesden garage in London in early 1965 and was utilized as part of the west-end Shoplinker fleet before being withdrawn from duty in 1987. It was imported to North America in the 1990s, where it served as a tour bus in Ontario and spent time in Pennsylvania prior to being overhauled and transformed into a mobile kitchen and party venue by Apex Speciality Vehicles of Missouri in 2019. Finished in red with a custom wrap, the bus incorporates a pizza kitchen with stainless-steel surfaces on its first level and an upper-deck dining area housed within dual slide-outs and a lift-up roof. Custom features include four exterior LCD televisions, exterior speakers, LED lighting, a mini-split air conditioning system, bifold rear-platform doors leading to a 90° staircase, diner-style upper-deck seating, two upper-deck TVs, and an air-ride driver’s seat with red diamond-stitched upholstery. The bus is powered by a Cummins turbodiesel inline-six that drives a dually rear axle via an Allison automatic transmission, while AC power is provided to the kitchen and dining area by a 30kW Kubota diesel generator housed in an included dual-axle trailer. Designed by London Transport and built by the Associated Equipment Company, Routemaster buses entered service in 1956 and remained active on London bus routes until 2005, despite production of the model ending in 1968. Construction incorporated an aluminum-skinned aircraft-style body riding on front and rear steel subframes carrying the powertrain and running gear. While over half of the 2,876 RM and RML examples built were scrapped at the end of their service in the late 1980s through the 2000s, the remaining buses were employed on heritage routes or sold to the public, with many such as this example imported to other countries.
Work performed during the Apex Specialty Vehicles build included refurbishment of the body framework and replacement of the outer skin, with modifications reportedly made to accommodate added weight. The upper deck was rebuilt to incorporate automated slide-outs that increase the width of the upper deck to approximately 12’ as well as a replacement roof panel with an automated lift mechanism and batwing awnings. The slide-outs and roof can reportedly be controlled via an iPad or onboard switch panel.
The body is finished in red industrial enamel and wears multicolor graphics representing the selling dealer’s brewery. The bus retains its half-cab front layout, rear platform, and front and rear destination blinds, while modifications include four LCD televisions fitted in place of the right-side lower-level windows, speakers positioned around the exterior, LED lighting, backup cameras, bifold rear doors, and a left-side kitchen door with a tilt-out window. Black-painted wheels were installed by the selling dealer over yellow-painted hubs and are wrapped in 10R22.5 Firestone FS561 tires.
The lower deck houses a kitchen that was initially intended to demonstrate Zume Pizza’s automated preparation process. Featuring stainless-steel surfaces, the kitchen is equipped with three oven units, a Summit reach-in refrigerator with a glass door, an Arctic Air refrigerated toppings bar, two FWE moisture-holding heated food cabinets, stainless-steel sinks, air conditioning, LED lighting, a microphone system, and a fire suppression system.
The upper deck is accessed via a 90° staircase with chrome handrails and hosts diner-style seating with a central stainless-steel counter and stainless-steel countertops integrated into each slide-out. The bar stools are trimmed in red upholstery, as are a front seat and rear couch positioned under LCD TVs and speakers. Additional features include wood flooring, stainless-steel moldings, LED cage lights, and LED strip lighting. Areas of separation are visible at the edge of the red headliner over the staircase.
The cab hosts a Seats Inc. Heritage air-suspended driver’s seat trimmed in black upholstery with red diamond-stitched inserts. Matching upholstery is fitted overhead, where a triple-angle rearview camera screen and a Bluetooth stereo unit with dual speakers are also located. Additional features include a Skimo split air conditioning system, an inertia-reel shoulder belt, diamond-plate threshold flooring, and black door-panel trim with a red storage pocket. The four-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a Bluebird instrument cluster that includes a 140-km/h speedometer, a 5k-rpm tachometer, auxiliary gauges, and a digital display. The latter does not illuminate, and the odometer reading is unknown.
The turbocharged and intercooled Cummins inline-six was installed during the Apex build and sends power to the dually rear axle via an Allison automatic transmission.
Stopping power is provided by hydraulic drum brakes, while coil-spring suspension incorporates a double-wishbone front setup and a solid rear axle.
Included in the sale is a dual-axle Bravo trailer that houses an Engine Power Source singe-phase 30kW generator with a Kubota diesel engine in an open-case configuration. Features include a generator start-stop switch, a breaker panel, four power cables, and storage space. The trailer wears a wrap matching the bus’s design scheme and rides on yellow-painted wheels wrapped in 235/85R16 Westlake CR960A tires.
